The Assyrians’ Threat
Isaiah 36:1-22
Don’t be fooled by Hezekiah. He can’t save you. Don’t trust him when he tells you that the Lord will protect you from the king of Assyria.
Isaiah 36:18, CEV.
When King Sennacherib of Assyria invaded Judah and captured the country, he thought it would continue. He attempted to capture Jerusalem, the city of David. But the King and the people of the city had a stronghold to run
to. They had God. The story is the background for the next few days of the devotional.
King Sennacherib of Assyria sent his messengers to threaten the people. They spoke in the Hebrew language to
ensure that the people heard them. Several lies were told to the people. In verses 16 and 17, I saw a lie the enemy still
uses. Why do you want to invade my land and remove me? Why do you want to take me to another land? If my land
was not good enough would it have been attractive to you?
This is one of the baits of the enemy. He will promise you something else with the ploy to take your birthright away
from you. King Sennacherib met his waterloo when he said, “Hezekiah claims the Lord will save you. But don’t be
fooled by him. Were any other gods able to defend their land against the King of Assyria?” See Isaiah 36:18.
Our God is not like any other god. If anyone threatens you this way know that their end is near. Take the case to the
Lord. God will rise and fight them for you. Shalom.
