Relevance To Our Time

Judges 21:25
In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Every civilized society functions within certain rules and regulations. Any life that is not functioning within certain boundaries can never be a productive life. Discipline becomes effective when boundaries are set.

The failure to function within God’s ordained rules and regulations led to the chaos observed in the book of Judges. Many times it was recorded that the people did evil before the Lord. The question is why do they find it difficult to remain under God’s governance and live within the laws that He had given their forefathers?

Before we blame them, we need to look into our lives and our society. Are we living within God’s rule and boundaries? Is our life reflecting the influence of God’s word and Spirit? Will it not be true to say that many times we are like the Israelites who did what was right in their eyes without regard for God’s word, laws and order?

I find the book of Judges to be relevant to our days in many areas.
1. We are living in a time when lawlessness and evil are on the rise.
2. Impunity and injustice continue to be the order of the day as it was in their time.
3. Individual, regional and national sin is on the increase.
4. God’s faithfulness and mercy continue in spite of our behavior and actions.

I believe the Lord will teach us more as we read the book. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Ask the Lord to show you the areas of your life where you have stepped out of His ordinances.
  • Ask for forgiveness and pray for the grace to live for Him.
