Expectation Of Trials

1 Thessalonians 3:1-3
So that no one would be unsettled by these trials.
For you know quite well that we are destined for them (1 Thessalonians 3:3).

In John 16:33, Jesus told his disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”. In another place He instructed them that the servant is not greater than their master. If he was persecuted, His disciples will face the same thing. See John 15:20.

Based on these passages, we must admit that Christ prepared us for a life of trial. From our devotional passage, Paul and his friends make us to understand that we are destined for them. Hear this, “So that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them” (1 Thessalonians 3:3, NIV).

Paul knew the church in Thessalonica may not understand this so he sent Timothy to them although they had been told. Timothy’s mission was to strengthen and encourage their faith. He is to remind them again that trials and adversities are part of the package for the believer so they are not to be worried.

The lesson for us is to have an expectation of trial. This would help to prepare for it. We must put on the whole armor of God as we have been instructed. Persecution is part of the package. When it happens we must not be surprised or shaken. May the Lord enlarge His words in our hearts in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Your Turn

  • Think on the above and how you have been fairing with regards to your perception of trials and   adversities.
