Delilah, No Ordinary Name
Judges 16:4-6
Some time later, he fell in love with a woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah (Judges 16:4, NIV).
Samson’s story starts with hope and great expectations, moved into sin, betrayal and pain but ends with hope and the joy of restoration. However, we cannot skim his relationship with Delilah which finally led to his death.
By now in his story, it appears that Samson’s heart had already gone too far from the Lord. Delilah’s name means “languishing”. It means “deterioration”. Its root word is from the word translated “to bring low”. What a name! A discerning mind would have known that she was a no go area. But Samson’s spirit could not pick this warning that Delilah had come to him to bring him low into a state of languish.
Samson, whose name means “of the sun”, did not know that his encounter with Delilah would lead to his sunset. Friend, we
need to be careful about the associations we keep. We need to make sure that we are walking with people of integrity and not sinners. See Psalm 1. We must ensure that we run away from what God says we should run from, sexual sin being one of them. See 1 Corinthians 6:18.
Do not lose your destiny through wrong associations. Others have died prematurely, unable to fulfil their purpose. Let us
pray and ask for forgiveness where we have erred. I believe the sun of Righteousness will rise on us and heal us.
