Creating A Legacy Of Faith

Deuteronomy 6:1-15
You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up (Deuteronomy 6:7).

One of the challenges we are facing in our times is teaching our children the way of the Lord and encouraging them to remain in Him. When it comes to this, I think those of other faiths are doing a better job than Christians. Yet, the fear of losing his generation made Abraham to send his servant to his family and get a wife for Isaac. He recognised that if Isaac married a Canaanite woman, he would be lured away from faith in Jehovah.

How can we create a legacy of faith? How can we teach our children to love the Lord the way we do? According to the passage we read we can do the following:

1. Teach them the word of God. Expose them to Bible reading and Sunday school classes.
2. Share with them the word of God through prayer and testimonies of what the Lord is doing in your life. When you pray together and the Lord answers the prayers it stays in the memory.
3. Let your actions be guided by the word. Many times we have to tell them what Jesus expects us to do and why.
4. Pray continually for them. Satan is not happy when our children seek to develop a closer walk with God. It is a battle. But God’s word in Isaiah 49:24-25 will stand sure.
5. Model love and forgiveness before them.
6. Model Christian lifestyle and ethics. This is very important. Many have walked away from the faith because they cannot see a lifestyle that matches what they read in the word of God.

Your Turn

  • Pray for yourself and your family.
