Watch And Serve

Mark 13: 32-37
Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming- in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning (Mark 13:35).

Today’s devotional passage reminds me of the story of the ten virgins and how five of them were prepared with oil in the lamp and the other five were unprepared. See Matthew 25:1-13.  Jesus concluded the story saying, “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming” (Matthew 25:13).

As a follow-up to the passage we read yesterday, Jesus continues to warn His disciples on the need to be watchful. First, we are to watch out for false teachers and their doctrines.  Second, we are to watch and focus on kingdom service and do what we have been called and gifted to do while we wait for His return.

The Master in our passage expected his servants and the doorkeeper to do their work. We must do our work too so that we are not caught napping. What has the Lord asked you to do? On which doorpost have you been posted to keep watch for the Lord? Are you called to be a Sunday school teacher, an intercessor or a teenager’s counselor?

How about your role at your workplace? Whichever work you have been assigned, do your part. The Lord will reward you on His return. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Thank God for the reminder to be watchful and serve.
  • Pray for the grace to serve where the Lord has called and anointed you.

Hymn: When Jesus comes to reward His servants (O can we say we are ready brother?).
