Why Do We Need To Contend?
Jude 3-5
Some people have slipped in among you unnoticed (Jude 4, God’s Word Translation).
Have you ever been at a religious gathering where you heard the preacher say something like this: “It does not matter how you live. What matters most is your spirit”? Here is another one: “God understands that we are human beings. He will always forgive your sins as long as you confess it”? If you have, then you may have encountered teachings that are not absolutely founded on the doctrine of Christ.
Although there are elements of truth in these statements, they are not the whole truth. This is the reason we need to know why we have been asked to contend for the faith. We have been warned that we must watch out for those who preach what is not in line with the whole counsel of God as revealed in the Scriptures.
The translation in our focal text would help us to see what these men do. The Bible says, “They are people to whom God means nothing. They use God’s kindness as an excuse for sexual freedom and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ” (Jude 4, God’s Word Translation).
From this verse we see three characteristics: God means nothing to them; they support a lustful and sexually perverted lifestyle and deny that Jesus is Lord. With this background in mind, we can work through the rest of the book. Shalom.
Your Turn
- Can you identify any of these characteristics around you?
- Do you think we need to correct the errors that are being spread by such men? If no, why? If yes, why? Take your concerns to God.
Song: Amen, Amen, blessing and glory.
