Vigilance

1 Peter 5: 8-11
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8).

We need to be vigilant in our defense of the faith. As we continue to contend for the faith externally, we must pay attention to our inner man too. This requires vigilance.  Some of the synonyms for vigilance include attentiveness, awareness and watchfulness.

When you are watchful, you are alert to what is going on around you. This involves being an active listener and not being passive when we listen to sermons and teachings. This would help us to avoid being swept off our feet by men and women who use words, clichés and their charisma to deceive their hearers.

There is a need for us to be informed about new ministries and current issues in our society. For example, many of us are unaware of the major ministries or denominations that are preaching wrong doctrines in our community because we are too holy or so focused on our little world. Yet, our children and family members mingle with the members of these groups outside our homes.

When asked, many of us do not know what the New Age Movement is all about. Friend, we cannot afford to be ignorant of things that could have effect on us. Be vigilant through prayer, the study of the word of God and fellowship with other believers where we can find help when we need it. The Lord will help us. Shalom.
