Unnecessary Distractions
Judges 8:1-3
Why didn’t you send for us when you first went out to fight the Midianites? They demanded (Judges 8:1,The Living Bible).
Today’s passage is an interesting one. In it we see a display of divine wisdom in a man like Gideon. Friend, we need his spirit of wisdom. No wonder we are told in Isaiah 11: 2, that one of the spirits that will rest on Jesus Christ is the spirit of wisdom and counsel. If Jesus had it, then we can have it. The Ephraimites’ complaint was an unnecessary distraction to Gideon from the main issue which was defeating and getting rid of the Midianites. Their complaint was that he did not call them when he went for the battle. Gideon’s response in verses 2-3 revealed great wisdom. He said, “God let you capture Oreb and Zeeb, the generals of the army of Midian! What have I done in comparison with that? Your actions at the end of the battle were more important than ours at the beginning!” So they calmed down” (The Living Bible).
Thank God for Gideon because the battle would have been extended, aborted or become unfinished business. It would have engendered some internal strife. This is the reason we need to be sensitive and allow the Holy Spirit to help us in managing our relationships.
Let me add that if there are people you need to share information or ideas with, respond as wisely as you can, so that you can avoid this type of accusation and distraction.
Your Turn
- Pray for yourself as you reflect on some of the accusations you have been receiving.
- Ask the Lord to give you the wisdom you need to manage them.
- Pray for me that I will be wise in my affairs too. Thank you.
