The Necessity Of Prayer

Luke 18:1-8
One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.
(Luke 18:1, NLT).

Prayer has been defined as the act of communing and developing intimacy with God. True as this may seem, there is more to prayer than developing intimacy with Him. Through prayer, we give God permission to influence our world and situations with His power and love.

Our prayer allows us to work with God to fulfill His will here on earth. Prayer also reveals our dependency on Him. Prayer is so important that the saints through all generations have made it the most important act of the Christian life.

The potency of prayer is so great that Jesus told the disciples that, “men ought to pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1). As we look at this topic, the question we need to ask ourselves is: Do I really know what prayer is, and how have I as a believer fared in this spiritual discipline? How can I grow in prayer so that I can do more exploits for the Lord and bring glory to His name?

Charles Spurgeon writes: “Prayer is the breath of faith. Prayer meetings are the lungs of the church … I have seen enough in my own life to fill a volume concerning the goodness of the Lord in answer to his children’s prayers”. May the Lord help us to rise to this call to pray and enjoy the benefits that the saints of old enjoyed. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Pray for a fresh vision of the need for prayer in your local church.
