Shebna, The Prime Minister
Isaiah 22:15-25
What are you doing here? What right do you have to dig a tomb for yourself? What right do you have to cut it out in a prominent place?
Isaiah 22:15, GWT.
Shebna is the prime minister of the land. God saw his activities and the atrocities he has committed and decided to visit him. He built a tomb for himself, where he was not supposed to build it or has a right to. God plotted his replacement and mentioned the name!
Friend, God will judge individuals too not just nations. Leaders who think they are untouchable and unstoppable
are not beyond the reach of God. Sometimes a wicked leader remains in leadership because the time for judgment is not ripe or the people they oppress have not cried out to the Lord enough.
God said, “I will remove you from your office and do away with your position. When that day comes, I will call
my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah” (Isaiah 22:19-20). The reason for his replacement is stated in verse 21b. God
wanted a leader who will be a father to the people of Jerusalem and Judah but Shebna was not.
Could it be that he ruled with highhandedness and corruption? Were the people driven deeper into poverty
and poor social conditions? It is my prayer that we will not be replaced in Jesus Name. May the Lord help us to lead
and serve with fairness and equity. May we represent Him and serve His people well. Shalom.
