Mind Your Own Business
1 Thessalonians 3:11b-12
You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you (1 Thessalonians 3:11 b, NIV ).
To ‘mind your business’ simply means to focus on what concerns you and not meddle in other peoples matter. In the context of our study and today’s Bible reading, we could deduce that God wants us to mind our own business for two reasons.
- To win the respect of others: When we focus on our life goals and purpose we will earn respect. We will also be productive so that we can meet our own needs and not be a burden to others.
- To be financially independent: When we mind our business we will have the time to engage in a life work that earns us money. This will help us to be independent of others. Yes, there are times that we would need external help and support but it must not become our daily habit.
Friend, I am challenged by this short verse because it means I have to trust God for favor, breakthrough and work hard to make money. I need to prosper and not be a burden to others. It is better to be a blessing than to be a burden to others.
What is your attitude to work? How focused are you on working with your hands to earn a living and respect? Think on these things. Shalom.
