It Takes Two

Ruth 3:5-6
Ruth answered her, “I will do whatever you say”
(Ruth 3:5, God’s Word Translation).

Today, I want to add that it takes two to have a solid and positive mentoring relationship. That is why the Bible says, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). In order to have and enjoy the kind of relationship that Ruth and Naomi had, we must be willing to listen and respond to the wisdom that God speaks to us through the men and women that serve as covering over us.

Ruth submitted to Naomi. We saw it in chapter two and now in chapter three. She knew she was in a covenant relationship with the older woman. She was willing to learn from her. When Naomi told her of the need to find a home, she listened and followed instructions. The Bible says, “Ruth went to the threshing floor and did exactly as her mother-in-law had directed her” (Ruth 3:5-6). That is submission.

Friend, you may not need this message today. But I am sure you will need it in the days to come when God will send His servants to speak into your life. Will you be ready to listen when you know that the wisdom of God is speaking to you through them? One of the challenges of our generation is that we are very proud and we think we know everything. Yet, God wants us to depend on one another in order to stand strong. May the Lord expand this truth in your heart. Shalom.

Your Turn

  • Pray for yourself. Are there times in your life that you have rejected the counsel of people God has brought into your life?
  • Talk to God about it.
