Gideon’s Mistakes

Judges 8:22-35
And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah … (Judges 8:27).

As long as Gideon worshipped and reverenced the Lord, he succeeded in his career as a Judge. His life proved to us that though we may think we are nothing or small, in us lies greatness if we would allow God to help us to draw it out.

However, because Gideon was human he made mistakes too. He fell into one of the hazards of the anointed which is covetousness. The anointed always have their share of temptation. This could be sexual sin, greed or covetousness. There is a thin line between being humble, honouring the Lord and unconsciously ‘paying’ yourself. No wonder God warns that we should trust Him to pay us because the labourer is worthy of his wages.

Gideon had nothing do to with an ephod he was not a priest. His request in verse 24 could be greed – inspired because he had a right to have chosen what he needed without asking the people for their portion. For us, it means we need to be careful in all our ways. It is my prayer that the God of heaven and earth will help us and keep us from falling.

Gideon also fell into another problem and that was adultery (vs. 30). This led to the birth of a son who ended up killing his halfbrothers except one. May the Lord grant us grace to cry out to Him before we fall.
