Be Alert

Matthew 7:15-19
By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? ( Matthew 7:16, NIV ).

Friend, there is no better way to combat error and wrong doctrines than to be alert to it in our gatherings.

Just as we have learnt in the session on why we need to contend, we also need to know and appreciate the fact that our Lord and Savior warned and prepared us on how to be watchful and discern these wicked men. He said, “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves” (vs. 15, NIV).

Following this thought, Jesus provided that answer for us in our focal text. What He told them is relevant to us. We must observe and look out for these wolves who will creep into the church. “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? (vs. 16, NIV).

Notably, Jesus used the word “fruit” seven times in this passage. That tells me something. It shows the importance of the life that we live and how we live it. It shows the importance of paying attention to the life of our leaders and what they do.

Remember, “Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit” (vs. 17, NIV). If we fail to do this, we may regret it afterwards. A word is enough for the wise. Shalom.
