A ‘Yes’ Man?
Genesis 16:1-6
She said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” Abram agreed to what Sarai said. (Genesis 16:2, NIV).
The entrance of Hagar into the story of Abraham did not only change his life, family relationship and dynamics, it eventually changed his story and the trajectory of mankind.
Yet, what would have happened if Abraham had said, “No” to Sarah when she said to Abram, “Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.” (Genesis 16:2). Is it possible that what happened could have been averted? Was Abraham a ‘yes’ man? May be!
The latter part of the story revealed it was not God’s original intention. He accepted it and used it. Abraham pleaded with God to bless Ishmael. He did. Although, God had told Hagar He would. Someone may argue why God didn’t stop the pregnancy? Well, for me God allowed it for several reasons.
One, He would use it to prove to Abraham and Sarah that the cure to their barrenness was not beyond Him. He was waiting for the appointed time to send Isaac to earth. He has the global timetable.
Second, it proved that Abraham was fertile even at 85 years old. Three, they operated the law of procreation. Conception took place because both Abraham and Hagar were fertile.
Friend, let us watch that we do not become a ‘yes’ man or woman. Better to remain in His will than to face the troubles that could follow our impatience. Shalom.
