A Collective Duty
2 Timothy 1:13-14; Jude 3
…I write to you and encourage you to continue your fight for the Christian faith that was entrusted to God’s holy people once for all time (Jude 3, God’s Word Translation).
Someone may ask ‘Why are we bothering ourselves about these men, God can fight for Himself’? Yes, I agree with you that God can fight for Himself. But He has called us to join Him. We have a role to play. We contend for the truth because God has called us and empowered us to do so. We can do it.
Remember, He gave us the authority to condemn every tongue that rise up against us. See Isaiah 54:17. In the same vein, we are to defend the faith with the truth of the word of God. Jude writes the believers saying, “contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3).
It means that the job of contending for the faith is a collective duty. It is not the work of pastors and ministers of the gospel only. It is not the absolute remit of the deacons and deaconesses. Rather, we have all been called to do it as God’s representatives in our little corners.
As ambassadors for Christ we must not shy away from our duty. See 2 Corinthians 5:20a. We must know why we need to defend, learn how to contend and let the name of the Lord be glorified. The Lord will help us and we must not fail in standing for the truth. Shalom.
Your Turn
- Pray for yourself.
- Pray that you will understand your role in defending the faith we have received.
Song: Stand up, stand up for Jesus.
