Abimelech, A Man Of Strife
Judges 9:1-6
Ask them whether they want to be ruled by …Gideon’s seventy sonsor by one manmeaning me (Judges 9:2, The Living Bible).
Some of us may not be familiar with the story of Abimelech because that of his father, Gideon, overshadowed him. But we have a lot to learn from his life.
Abimelech was the son of Gideon’s concubine. He stirred up internal conflict within his family and nation. He committed murder and was made king unlawfully. From verse 4, we could see what a rebellious and cruel spirit it caused in a family or society. Rebellious people are always supported and sponsored by evil men with questionable money to do evil deeds.
Sponsored by dubious men, Abimelech set up a political party. He hired thugs and organized a political campaign from the temple of Baal Berith one of the gods of the land which God frowned at. Using cunningly framed words, he got the support of his mother’s people to follow him. This began a series of evil actions that led to murder, war and unnecessary deaths.
Reading through the story, I understood that we do not have to stir up reckless conflicts to get what we want. If it is meant for you, God will arrange it. The way of the righteous is the way of peace. In our families, we must endeavour to live in love and be at peace. Knowing Jesus should make a difference in our lives and attitudes. Let us think on these things.
