Ehud, The Left Handed Judge
Judges 3:12-30
Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly (Judges 3:21).
From today’s Bible reading we could see that the patience of God is inexhaustible. God knew they will sin and go astray so He allowed Ehud to be born. Ehud became skillful at using his left hand.
I see several lessons we could learn from the passage:
1. Sin brings reproach, loss and enslavement. No matter how good it may look or feel, when we disobey God and refuse to repent, we will bear the consequence. The Israelites lost the city of palm tree because of sin.
2. God can use anything and anyone. Do not reject yourself.
3. There is no useless skill, gift or talent. Develop what you have and be ready to use them. Some may have looked down on Ehud’s left handedness but God says it is a useful tool. At the right time, his hand became the anointed hand to slay the enemy.
4. Study your enemy and map out your battle strategy. Ehud developed a plan for the best way to kill King Eglon – a 45cm dagger did the job. Remember, David’s five stones and Moses’ shepherd rod. God can use anything if we would listen to Him for direction.
Interestingly, the victory they won gave them a generation’s peace eighty years of rest. While Ehud used his left hand, Shamgar used an ox goad to kill 600 men. This is God empowering men to do great exploits with their skills.
