Now Thank We All Our God

Psalm 136:36
Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ. (2 Corinthians 2:14).

The hymn was written by Martin Rinckart, a German in 1636 and translated by Catherine Winkworth. The hymn was written during the Thirty-Years War in Germany. It was a time of illnesses, epidemics and loss of lives. Martin lost his wife during the time.

It is a hymn of thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness despite the losses and all that war brought on the people at that time. Stanza 1, started with praise, Stanza 2 alluded to the need for strength in the time of difficulty and stanza 3, renews faith and gives praise to the Eternal God.

Now thank we all our God
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom his world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

All praise and thanks to God
the Father now be given,
the Son and Spirit blest,
who reign in highest heaven
the one eternal God,
whom heaven and earth adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

May the Lord touch our heart to give Him praise in all season.
Shalom.
