Make Doctrine An Issue
1 Timothy 4:12-16
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you (1 Timothy 4:16).
n individual or a church that is not strong on sound doctrines will be easily swayed with every wind of doctrine the enemy brings. In order for our doctrines to be preserved, we must make doctrinal teachings an issue. This is what would help us to fight and not entertain corruption and heresy.
The Nelson’s Bible Dictionary defines doctrines as, “A body of beliefs about God, man, Christ, the church, and other related concepts considered authoritative and thus worthy of acceptance by all members of the community of faith”. Our doctrine includes that of faith in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment among others. See Hebrews 6:1-3.
Friend, no matter the differences in our denominational inclination, these are basic doctrines that cannot be compromised in our congregations. And since the faith we are contending for is the body of truth that Christianity is built upon, we must not err in doctrine. In addition, our theology and doctrine must also bear on moral issues in our society as revealed in the word of God.
Paul wrote, “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine. Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you” (1 Timothy 4:16). We will do well to heed this advice. Shalom.
Your Turn
- Ask yourself what you believe and what your church community’s beliefs are?
- Are they based on the truth of the word of God as revealed in the Holy Scriptures and sound doctrine?
